Smoke & Heat Alarms

The earliest warning of a fire

Working alarms give you and your family the earliest possible warning of a fire. Mains-powered alarms with battery backup, interlinked so that when one sounds they all sound, offer the best protection.

We recommend smoke alarms in hallways and landings, and a heat alarm in the kitchen, where cooking can set off smoke alarms. Where you have a boiler, fire or other fuel-burning appliance, a carbon monoxide alarm should be fitted too.

In England, landlords must fit a smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance (gas cookers excepted), and repair or replace alarms when they're told they're faulty.

Areas we cover: Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Trafford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside and Wigan, across Greater Manchester.

Smoke & Heat Alarms: your questions answered

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

Most smoke and heat alarms should be replaced every ten years. Check the date on the back of the alarm.

What's the difference between a smoke alarm and a heat alarm?

A smoke alarm detects smoke particles and gives the earliest warning. A heat alarm responds to a rapid rise in temperature, so it's better suited to kitchens, where smoke alarms can be set off by cooking.

Do landlords need mains-powered alarms?

The regulations in England don't always require mains-powered alarms, but they are more reliable and are required in some properties, such as new builds and many HMOs.
